“All done” dad’s musical voice sang out as he rounded the corner to the bathroom. Jayden sat gleefully playing in the tub when his dad found him. He tried to get Jayden to sing with him but to no avail. Jayden is almost four and still non-verbal, but that doesn’t stop him from making happy “E” sounds in response. He gets toweled off and giggles when his dad wraps him up like a burrito as he is whisked away to his room. His dad sings the pajama song and Jayden gets dressed. He’s tried for years to help Jayden talk. He’s bought books and watched videos, tried sign language and other programs, and even has Jayden enrolled in speech therapy. Jayden’s dad was all but defeated. He often felt he was a failure since he couldn’t help his son with such a simple task. He looks down at his son and kisses him softly. He gathers the covers, tuck him in, and leans in to give Jayden a goodnight hug. “I love you son.” He whispers to him. Then, in the smallest, almost fragile voice, the father hears two sweet sounds, “Da da”. The dad’s eyes suddenly swell with tears at hearing his son’s voice. He couldn’t believe what he just heard. He beamed with optimism and was completely filled with hope. After years of arduous work he finally heard his son! He stroked Jayden’s hair and smiled. “I’ll never stop believing in you son. I’ll never give up hope.”
