It was late afternoon in the middle of May when Katie finally arrived to the small farming town of Lodi California. She had spent weeks planning her trip, travelled over 2000 miles and spent the last hour in a cramped car just to get to the town. The town had gathered for the Bing cherry festival, and it was on Katie’s bucket list to try the sweet cherry fresh from the tree. A local farmer handed her a small plate of the dark red cherries with their bright green stems. Almonds on the plate were meant to balance out the sweetness. Katie sat down beside the tree the cherries were picked from and looked at the burnt orange and yellow sky. The sun slowly sinking behind a hill. “At last.” She breathed with a sigh of relief and exhaustion. She took a small bite from one of the cherries. As the sweet juice burst from the punctured skin and splashed onto her lips she smiled. She relaxed into the moment and let the intoxicating experience flood her senses. She closed her eyes, felt the warm Californian breeze across her face and took another bite. “It was everything I had hoped for.” She said to herself. “Totally worth it!”
